Manuring in the farm – GAP Practice at Kallingal

Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) with minimum chemical intervention and with preferential adoption of organic manure is practiced, though minimum application of synthetic fertilizer is also resorted to so that nutrient deficiencies do not crop up.

Kallingal follows GAP with minimum or zero tillage. The coconut basin is never disturbed or roots cut. Farm yard manure and green leaf manure form the back bone of nutrient supply though it is supplemented every year with minimum quantity of synthetic fertilizers of  N, P, K, Mg and micro nutrients based on soil test recommendations

Cow dung palm and green leaf manure is applied as a basal dressing.  About 25000  glyricidia  plants are grown for this  purpose.  Crop residues like coconut palm leaf, husk, coconut   spathe,  spadix  etc. are also put in the basin for organic enrichment of the garden. 9 Cows are maintained to ensure required quantity of cow dung. Dung from 3 horses is also applied in the farm. Manure from other animals and birds are also applied to the crops.

Liming to correct soil acidity is carried out every year two weeks prior to farm yard manure application which is spread all over the land. The ash produced in the farm and the house is applied to the land.
