While Ciby started nutmeg cultivation, he collected more than 30 types of nutmeg from all parts of Kerala and planted in his garden. Through meticulous evaluation of selected 12 superior genotypes for further planting and multiplication. These types are now popular as Kallingal 1 (K 1) to Kallingal 12 (K12), Ciby gradually started multiplication of these types through budding on wild variety nutmeg. Use of wild variety as root stock enables deep root system, to extract water from deeper layers of soil, better anchorage to prevent uprooting in the wind, better growth and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The experiments and observations with wild variety made Ciby and Sopna to understand that short stature mother trees when budded on wild variety causes the problem of bottling. Further analysis of the situation led to the finding that the bottling in nutmeg is caused by the differences in growth rate between root stock and scion types.
So Ciby and Sopna confirms that only plants with comparable growth rate (K1, K3,K3,K5 etc)should be budded on wild variety nutmeg, for (short statured types) budding is to be done on local types (K4 and K8).
This finding was reported and discussed with the Indian Institute of Spice Research and the Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur. They agreed upon the scientific validity of the finding.
